Why Algae ?
BUSINESS REASONS:

  • Algae grow much faster than
    conventional crops used to make
    biofuels, potentially doubling mass
    every three hours.

  • Micro-algae have a naturally high oil
content that can be converted to
    biodiesel fuel.

  • Algal biomass can be converted to
liquid, solid or gaseous forms of fuel
with a relatively high energy content.

  • Algal biomass is rich in nutrients and
proteins (including omega oils) that can
be converted to fertilizer, animal feed,
    pharmaceuticals and other valuable
    products.

  • Algae farms can operate symbiotically
    with power plants, wastewater
    treatment plants, animal feeding
    facilities and other operations.
ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS:

  • Algae growth reduces global warming
potential by consuming about twice it's
    weight in carbon dioxide.

  • Algae actually improve the water used
for growth by removing nutrients and
    adding dissolved oxygen.

  • Algae uses less water than other biofuel
crops and can use non-potable water
    sources, like seawater.

  • Algae can be grown on non-arable land
and therefore does not have to compete
    with food crops.

  • Algae based biofuels are renewable and
    carbon neutral potentially reducing the
    consumption of petroleum based fuel
    sources and the associated
    environmental impacts.
